Celebrity-loved grocery chain Erewhon has added a very controversial new item to its shelves: a toothpaste-flavored smoothie.
The California-based supermarket often makes headlines for its celebrity clientele as well as its sky-high prices.
Justin Bieber, Brooklyn Beckhamand the Kardashians are just some of the A-listers who have been spotted at the up-scale chain, which has 14 stores around Los Angeles.
But the multi-million dollar outlet has recently received a lot of attention online for another reason – its brand new smoothie flavor.
Earlier this week, Erewhon announced that it had teamed up with the oral-care brand Boka to release the Mint Condition Smile Smoothie.
The $11 12-ounce drink was inspired by that ‘fresh, just-brushed feeling you get from’ Boka’s Ela Mint Nano-Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste.
It ‘blends citrus green tea with coconut milk, fresh mint, mango and banana, enhanced by chlorophyll, blue spirulina and silica,’ per its website.
It’s finished with ‘cacao nibs and coconut flakes’ and ‘contains caffeine from the tea base.’

‘Yes, a smoothie inspired by toothpaste might sound unusual, but that’s what made it so fun to create,’ Boka senior director of brand marketing, Kinsey Butler, told Food & Wine.
‘Our goal was to capture that bright, clean sensation you get from brushing with our Ela Mint toothpaste and translate it into a smoothie people would actually enjoy.’
Erewhon tonic bar director and curator, Nathan Day, added, ‘We took inspiration from the ingredients used in Ela Mint and reformulated them into this delicious beverage.
‘It’s as refreshing as it is creamy, and the first sip will put you in a spa – cozy bathrobe and slippers included.’
If you’re curious and want to try it make sure to head to Erewhon sooner rather than later because it will only be available at the chain through the end of November.
Fans had mixed reviews online, with some claiming it tasted delicious and others slamming the combination.
‘Tried it and loved it,’ wrote one user on Instagram, while another agreed, ‘So refreshing.’
Someone else disagreed, commenting, ‘I’m sorry, but this was one of the worst things I’ve ever tasted in my life. It tasted like toothpaste.’

‘Did not like this one at all. Tasted like toothpaste,’ slammed a different person.
‘This was the worst smoothie EVER,’ announced another user.
‘It is disgusting… went straight into trash,’ read a sixth post.
A reporter for Good Housekeeping praised the drink in a review.
They noted that the mint taste was not overpowering and that the first sip gave ‘typical smoothie vibes.’
‘Citrus and mango and coconut reign supreme, and it’s super smooth and creamy,’ they wrote.
‘The mint comes in as a refreshing pop of flavor, rather than the full-throttle flavor. It’s super refreshing, and when you get to the crunchy bits at the top (the nibs and coconut flakes) it’s a fun flavor sensation. I found myself scraping the sides of the cup to get every bit.’
Erewhon has been ridiculed in the past for slapping hefty price tags on everyday staples.
Last year, it came under fire for releasing 32-ounce soups for a whopping $25 each – and you had buy two at a time, forcing shoppers to fork out a staggering $50 for two jars.
Other shockingly pricey items that have gone viral over the years include a $19 bottle of ‘raw milk,’ $25.99 ‘hyper oxygenated water’ and $29.99 packs of ice.
The latter, called ‘Cocktail Ice Ballz,’ are round-shaped ice cubes that claim to keep your drink cooler for longer.
