Hidden at the back of my wardrobe, quietly evading the charity shop bag, are a pair of jeans I simply can’t bear to get rid of. They’re a dark denim design from River Island, completely festooned in jewels, and even though I haven’t worn them since I was about 25, my inner magpie just cannot let them go.

Imagine my joy then, to discover that this season, embellished jeans are back. Okay, it might not time to unleash my crystal skinnies right now (skintight plus diamante is not exactly the look we’re talking about), but a much cooler take on dazzling denim is currently making a splash – and like the entire You magazine fashion team, I am very much here for it.

Women of a certain age will hear the phrase ‘embellished jeans’ and immediately be transported back to butterfly-embroidered bootlegs from the early Noughties, but happily they are not having a revival. No, think boyfriend or barrel-shaped jeans with rhinestones or studstastefullyapplied.

Plenty of high street brands have got in on the action, so we’re certainly not short of options when it comes to embellished jeans. But how should they be styled? You’s fashion bookings editor Lila Flint Roberts recommends teaming embellished denim with a chunky, oversized jumper and kitten heels. ‘Avoid an outfit that’s too girly-girly, you need your outfit to be a bit boyish to balance out the glitz’ advises junior fashion stylist Jessica Carroll.

As for denim shapes, the entire fashion team agree that clingy embellished denim is not a good look – you need to opt for a straight or wide leg in order to nail the trend this season. Sigh – I guess those River Island beauties will have to stay concealed for a while longer.
